The PKM is a "modernized" version of the PK which was a medium machine gun designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov based on his AK-47 design. The first PKM's were developed in 1969 and have served many purposes. It's main role is that of the crew-served medium machine gun, but the PKM can also be used for anti-aircraft purposes and can be mounted on vehicles.
